Diversity of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in the Refugio de Vida Silvestre Laguna Cabral o Rincón, Dominican Republic

Abstract
A myrmecological inventory was carried out in the Refugio de Vida Silvestre Laguna Cabral o Rincón, a protected area located in the southwestern region of the Dominican Republic. Twenty sampling stations were established, using a set of collection methods in each of the stations. Shannon’s equity and Simpson’s dominance indices were calculated to estimate diversity, and sampling efficiency was estimated using species accumulation curves. A total of 4752 individuals belonging to 40 species, distributed in 5 subfamilies and 22 genera were collected. The most abundant species were Paratrechina longicornis and Crematogaster steinheili. The dominance value registered for the study area is considered low (λ = 0.132) and diversity medium (H' = 2.457). The accumulation curves suggest that the sampling was representative, obtaining up to 96% of the expected richness. The diversity found is not considered indicative of a good state of conservation, due to the high number of introduced species.
